In the USSR, a school uniform was mandatory for all primary and secondary school students, as well as for students in higher education institutions. It usually consisted of dark trousers or a skirt, a blouse or shirt, a jacket and a tie.

The purpose of introducing school uniforms in the USSR was to create a uniform appearance for students, improve discipline in schools, and express respect for the educational process. Also, issues of differences in clothing for students from different social classes were excluded.

In school uniforms, the state emphasized its role in raising children and sought to create unity and order in the school community. Schoolchildren in the USSR wore uniforms every day of the school year, with the exception of summer vacations.

Today, the practice of mandatory school uniforms in the CIS countries and Russia has been abolished, but in some schools it still exists and can be introduced at the discretion of the school administration.

Today, in many countries, schools may require or encourage the wearing of a school uniform. The purpose may be to create a uniform image for students, reduce social inequality among them, increase respect for the educational process, etc.

But at the same time, there are critics who believe that school uniforms limit students’ self-expression and should not be mandatory, but should be a choice for parents and students.
