Stalls in the USSR were independent small retail outlets located on the streets, in the entrances of buildings, at markets and in other places. Stalls sold various goods – from food and alcohol to toys and household appliances. In the USSR, kiosks were one of the main places for selling goods.
I remember well the Soyuzpechat kiosks, where you could buy the press, postage stamps, badges, stationery. And from the films – beer kiosks – razlivayki were popular.
However, as the market economy developed, kiosks in the USSR gradually gave way to shops and supermarkets. In the 1990s, kiosks became associated with unofficial retail outlets and became associated with illegal trade. Kiosks are now found in some regions of Russia and other CIS countries and often offer fresh food and local souvenirs.
