Peasant Magazine (Krestyanka Magazine)

The magazine “Krestyanka” was one of the most popular magazines published in the Soviet Union from 1927 to 1991. It was created for women, especially rural women, and was devoted to topics of agriculture, housekeeping, family issues and fashion. Even though we lived in the city, we always subscribed to the magazine “Krestyanka” (for those who don’t know, you could subscribe to the magazine or newspaper at the post office and they were regularly delivered and dropped into the mailbox).

The magazine “Krestyanka” published articles on agriculture, gardening, livestock farming, cooking and food preparation. It gave practical advice on housekeeping, childcare, growing vegetables and fruits. The magazine also contained handicrafts, knitting, fashion trends and advice on creating beautiful and cozy interiors.

Krestyanka was available to a wide audience of women, including rural women, who made up a significant portion of the USSR population. The magazine was designed to help women improve their domestic skills and improve their quality of life.

Along with practical advice, Krestyanka also published literary works, poems, stories and journalism related to rural life and rural traditions. The magazine tried to show the socio-cultural significance of women in rural areas and raise issues related to their lives and the lives of their families.

The magazine “Krestyanka” continued its publication after the collapse of the USSR, but with changes in accordance with the new socio-economic conditions. Currently, the periodical “Krestyanka” no longer exists, but its history remains part of the cultural heritage of the USSR.
