The USSR had a long tradition of issuing postage stamps, which often reproduced images of prominent figures, landmarks, cultural and historical monuments, animals and other images. The issuance of stamps was not only a means of distributing mail, but was also an important cultural event.
The first postage stamp in Russia was issued in 1857. The number of stamps issued grew as the national economy of the USSR developed, and already in the 1930s an extensive series of stamps was created depicting the main branches of the economy and sources of income of the country.
By the end of the 1970s, several thousand types of postage stamps were issued in the USSR, which became not only collectibles, but also a reflection of the country’s history and culture over many years.
