Beer houses

In the USSR there were beer establishments called “pivnushki”. They usually sold different types of beer (Zhigulevskoe, Moskovskoe, Leningradskoe, Yachmenniy Kolos, Rizhskoe, Ukrainskoe, Velvet, Porter), snacks and soft drinks. Pivnushki were popular among young people and students, and they were also often visited by workers after work.

Nowadays, many beer establishments use the term “beer bar” or “pub”.

The cost of beer in Soviet beer houses varied depending on the region, type of establishment, brand of beer and year. However, according to historical data, in the 1980s, the cost of a glass of beer was about 30 kopecks, which was quite affordable for the majority of the population. Prices for snacks and other drinks were also affordable for the average citizen.

Beer on draft

It may seem strange now, but beer in the USSR was poured straight from a barrel on the street. A mug of such beer cost 22 kopecks. For comparison, a mug of kvass from a barrel cost 6 kopecks.
